NARRATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP

Together with NRC editor Peter Zantingh, I teach narrative writing and reporting to Dutch journalism trainees. We explain how to identify a good narrative story, how to find the right characters, how to report for and write lively scenes, how to build narrative tension and story structure and how to use sensory detail, dialogue and personal interviews to make stories come alive.

Students work on specific stories during group meetings, and we help realize and publish their work after the workshop is done.

TRUE STORIES CONFERENCE

Co-organized four editions of the True Stories Conference on narrative journalism in the Netherlands. Found and approached potential speakers. Coached speakers. Managed Social Media communications and newsletters.

NARRATIVE WORKING GROUP — IPK

Organized a monthly salon for professionals in journalism, film, academics and the arts, to discuss the power and pitfalls of narrative in their respective fields in 2022-2023. Hosted by Suketu Mehta and Terry Curtis Fox at the Institute of Public Knowledge.

NARRATIVE JOURNALISM FOUNDATION NETHERLANDS

Served as a board member of the Stichting Verhalende Journalistiek (Narrative Journalism Foundation Netherlands). Introduced Dutch journalists and editors to narrative journalism and narrative reporting techniques. Organized a new narrative training program for Dutch journalists in audio, long form, multimedia and narrative thinking.

COACH — FONDS BIJZONDERE JOURNALISTIEKE PROJECTEN

Currently coach grantees on their journalistic projects. Help figure out the narrative basis of projects, how to weave personal narrative through investigative and data research, and how to gather the best material while reporting.
